Parenting the Banana Bros: What’s That?

As a boy mom, I find myself saying “What’s that?” way more than I ever anticipated.

As a boy mom, I find myself saying “What’s that?” way more than I ever anticipated. Just the other day my 5-year-old son came home from school…

Mommy: “B … what is that stuff over your face?”

B: “What stuff?”

M: “That white stuff. It’s everywhere.”

B: “Oh. Don’t worry. It’s just glue. It’s from school.”

M: “Why do you have glue on your face?”

B: “I was trying to stick my face to the table.”

One of the biggest obstacles I face as a mother is not to laugh in serious moments. There he was, my little ball of energy, staring me straight in the eye, and in all seriousness telling me that he was trying to Glue. His. Face. To. The. Table.

I can not laugh.

He glued his face to the table.

I can not laugh!

He glued his face to the table!

I CAN NOT laugh!

HE GLUED HIS FACE TO THE TABLE!

How does one not laugh? I can see him now, the power player at his little table of 4 in Kindergarten. The other 3, angels no doubt, in complete awe as B attempts to do the impossible.

Slowly pouring the Elmer’s Glue into the palms of his right hand. Slapping both hands together like a little gentleman with sticky aftershave. High fiving both of his cheeks and quickly covering every inch of his grinning face. Then, like the Cheshire Cat, he looks to his left. Looks to his right and WHAM! With everything he has he slams his to his desktop and FREEZE! He’s in all his glory!
